Las Olas surf coach, surfboard shaper, and singer/songwriter, Ashley Lloyd Thompson is featured in the June 2013 issue of O, the Oprah Magazine. Showing off her collection of custom, handmade surfboards, Ashley shares her story with Laura Birek as she explains what it was like to be an eight year old California surfer girl who was never taken seriously- until now.
Of course, her story has turned around. Ashley is now one of an elite, but growing group of women surfboard shapers. Her work is admired throughout the international surf community. In fact, Las Olas Surf Safaris is proud to have an early Ashley Lloyd board in our quiver today. And other female surfboards like Julie Cox’s Jules series and Kristy Murphy’s Sirens reflect our commitment to women’s specific equipment. We insist on boards that will help our guests surf with confidence, and as Ashley says, “balance, flexibility, and grace”.
Las Olas alumna often get hooked on surfing and buy boards of their own. I’m here to say, picking up your shiny, new surfboard, shaped just for you, is one of life’s best treats- better than any designer handbag!
As a proponent of women’s specific product most of my life, reading about Ashley’s success in O, The Oprah Magazine makes me giddy. She’s is a ray of sunshine who’s destined to be a legend in women’s surfing. You’ll have to buy the magazine for the details, but trust me, it’s a good read. Congratulations Ashley!
